Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom or under an outdoor pergola sounds great until you remember one thing: steam and splashing water. In those spots, a basic heater isn’t just a bad choice—it’s a risk. You need a setup that completely blocks electricity from leaking where it shouldn’t.
Stopping the Leaks
Here is the real secret: it’s all about the connection points. Most heaters fail right where the power wire hits the quartz tube. To fix that, we use high-temp silicone seals and reinforced epoxy. Think of it as a heavy-duty waterproof plug. It keeps the vapor from jumping the gap between the live power and the metal frame. And a quick tip? Check your IP rating. If it’s going in a bathroom, look forIPX4. Anything less and a stray splash of water could cause a real headache.
Fighting the Rust
Humidity is brutal on cheap metal. It just eats it alive. That’s why we stick with 304 or 316 stainless steel for the brackets and reflectors. If you use standard galvanized steel, it’ll rust out, ruin your grounding, and suddenly you’ve got a shock hazard on your hands. The heating element itself lives inside high-purity quartz. We make sure those seals are airtight. If even a tiny bit of moisture sneaks into that tube, it messes with the halogen gas and your lamp will burn out way too soon.
The Trade-offs
Even with the best insulation, you still need a GFCI breaker. Bathrooms are unpredictable. It’s just the safest way to do it. One more thing to keep in mind: heavy-duty waterproofing usually means a bulkier casing. It takes up more space and can slightly block the heat beam. You might need to mount the heater a bit higher to get that same cozy warmth on your skin. Also, if you’re running long cables out to a distant pergola, keep an eye on your voltage drop. You don’t want your heater struggling just because the wire is too long.
