
How to Get Your Ceiling Clearance Right for Infrared Heaters
If you’re putting infrared heaters in your outdoor dining area, don’t just slap them up and call it a day. If the gap between the heater and the ceiling is off, you’re basically paying to heat your roof while your guests are still shivering.
Why the Gap Matters
Think of our heaters like a flashlight, but with heat. They push warmth down in a specific cone. If you mount them too close to a low ceiling, that heat bounces right back into the machine. It gets too hot, the internal safety switch trips, and suddenly your heater just shuts off. To keep things running smooth, you usually want about 15 to 30 inches of breathing room. Also, take a look at what your ceiling is actually made of. Wood or plastic? Give it more space so you don’t scorch the material. Metal is a bit different—it reflects more heat back down to the guests, which is great for efficiency, but it can make the heater casing run hotter.

Finding the Sweet Spot
You might think mounting them as high as possible is the way to go to cover more ground. It’s not. If you go too high, you lose that “punch” of heat at the table. You need enough room for the ceiling gap, but you can’t go so high that the heat disappears.
