
Stop the Chipping: Why We Preheat Borosilicate Glass
If you’ve ever tried cutting borosilicate glass at room temperature, you know the frustration. You go to make a clean break, and instead, you get those annoying little chips or “corner breakouts” that ruin the whole piece. It happens because the glass is basically fighting you. There’s all this internal stress locked inside the material, and when the cutter hits, the glass snaps back in ways you didn’t intend. The fix? A bit of heat. We use short-wave infrared lamps to warm up the surface first. Think of it like warming up your muscles before a workout. By lowering the viscosity and relaxing that internal tension, the glass stops fighting. When the cutter finally hits the surface, it just glides. The science is pretty simple. When that IR radiation hits the glass, the temperature jumps fast. This makes the material a bit more “forgiving.” Instead of the crack jumping around and leaving you with jagged, ugly edges, the score line stays exactly where you put it. You get a clean, straight break every time. But you can’t just use any old bulb. You need high-wattage quartz halogen lamps. I can’t stress this enough: you need high heat density. If the lamps are too weak, the glass takes forever to warm up, or worse, you get cold spots. And a cold spot is just an invitation for another chip. Also, make sure your lamps actually fit your conveyor or jig. If the lengths don’t match, you’re just wasting electricity and ending up with uneven heat across the sheet. A few things to watch out for. Here’s the catch: these lamps pull a lot of power. If you’re hooking up a bank of 2000W tubes, double-check your wiring and breakers. You don’t want to trip the power in the middle of a run. And be careful not to go overboard with the heat. If the glass gets too hot and then hits a freezing cold surface too quickly, it can suffer thermal shock. That’s how you end up cracking the entire piece in half. It’s all about finding that sweet spot between a good preheat and a steady cooling rate. Get that right, and your edges will be smooth as silk.
