
Why Your IR Lamps are Probably Ruining Your Glass
Ever have one of those days where the first batch of glass comes out perfect, but the next one is a total disaster? You’ve got internal stress or weird optical distortions, and you’re staring at the oven controller wondering what on earth changed. Here’s the thing: it’s usually not the controller. It’s the lamps. If a few lamps in your bank are off by even 5%, you’ve got hot spots. Those thermal gradients basically freeze into the glass, and just like that, your whole batch is scrap. It’s frustrating.
The Trick to Even Heat
To stop this, we use high-purity quartz envelopes. The goal is to keep the infrared emission steady from one end of the tube to the other. When we talk about consistency, we’re really talking about how the filament is wound. If it’s uneven, you get “striping” on the glass. We keep the winding pitch incredibly tight so the heat flux stays flat. This stops the edges of your glass sheet from cooling down faster than the middle.
Making the Right Trade-offs
We stick with quartz because it can handle the shock of rapid heating and cooling without cracking. Plus, we use specific halogen fills to push the filament temperature higher without burning the wire out. This gives you more short-wave energy, which actually sinks deeper into the glass. But there’s a catch. Higher wattage means the lamp runs hot. If you’re pushing 2000W through a short tube, your reflectors have to be spotless. A little bit of dust or oxidation on the mirror traps heat, and that’s how you end up with a quartz tube that fails way too early.
Stopping the Guessing Game
You can’t just “program” your way out of bad hardware. If your lamps are putting out uneven heat, your PID controller is just averaging the error—it’s not actually fixing the problem. The only real fix is using lamps with matched electrical specs. When the voltage and resistance tolerances are tight, every part of the oven behaves the same way. It turns your annealing process into a repeatable science. No more crossing your fingers and hoping for the best.
