
Cutting ultra-thick glass is a fight. Plain and simple. If you try to score a thick slab cold, you’re basically punishing your equipment. You’ll chew through cutting wheels in record time, and you’re always one bad move away from a random, jagged crack that ruins the whole piece. We found a better way. We use high-penetration infrared (IR) heating lamps to soften the glass right where the cut needs to happen. Here’s the thing: standard heat doesn’t cut it. You need shortwave IR radiation. Instead of just warming up the surface, this energy sinks deep into the glass. It creates a little “sweet spot” of heat. By warming the glass exactly where the wheel hits, you kill that internal tension. The material actually gives a little. And your tools will thank you. When the glass is pre-softened, the wheel doesn’t have to fight so hard. You aren’t slamming a carbide edge into a frozen wall of glass. Less friction means the wheel stays sharp for way longer. We’ve seen a huge drop in how often we have to swap out tools. It stops feeling like you’re forcing a violent fracture and starts feeling like a clean, controlled separation. But you can’t just wing it. These lamps put out an insane amount of heat. If you just slap them into a frame, you’ll warp your mounting brackets before you even start. You need a cooling system that can actually keep up with the ambient heat. Distance matters, too. If the lamp is too close, you’ll stress the glass so much it might just shatter before the wheel even touches it. That’s why we use a precise PID controller. It keeps the temperature in that narrow window where the glass is compliant, but not unstable.
