
Why you should ditch those old bathroom heat lamps for infrared
Ever stepped out of a hot shower into a bathroom that feels like a walk-in freezer? We’ve all been there. Most of us grew up with those old-school heat lamps, but let’s be honest—they’re kind of a gamble. The problem is that bathrooms are basically steam rooms. Moisture gets everywhere. Eventually, that steam finds its way inside a standard heater, shorts something out, and suddenly your heater is just an expensive piece of ceiling plastic. That’s why we’re seeing everyone move toward high-IP infrared heaters. It just makes more sense.
Keeping the water out
In a bathroom, you’re dealing with splashes and thick clouds of steam. A basic heater isn’t built for that. The good stuff—the units with an IP65 rating or higher—is built like a tank. The chassis is sealed tight against dust and water jets. We use heavy-duty gaskets and sealed cable entries because if even a little bit of water hits the electrical terminals, the whole thing is toast. It’s all about peace of mind. You want to be able to shower without worrying if your ceiling is about to spark.
Heat you actually feel
Here is the real difference: traditional heaters try to warm up the air. But air is terrible at holding onto heat, especially if you have a drafty room or a vent running. The warmth just vanishes. Infrared is different. It doesn’t bother with the air; it sends out waves that hit your skin and the surfaces around you directly. It’s instant. You flip the switch, and you feel that cozy warmth immediately. No waiting around for the room to “warm up” while you’re shivering in a towel. We use quartz glass tubes with special coatings to pack a ton of heat into a small space. It’s efficient and, frankly, feels way better.
A few things to watch for during install
If you’re thinking about swapping yours out, don’t just rip the old one out and plug in the new one. These infrared units pull more juice than those old lamps. You’ll want to double-check your breakers and the thickness of your wiring. If you don’t, you’ll be tripping your circuit breaker every single time you want to get warm. Not a great way to start the morning. Also, keep in mind that because these are waterproof and reinforced, they’re a bit heavier. They usually fit right into the old ceiling mounts, but just make sure your ceiling supports can handle the extra weight before you wire everything up.
